Will my premium go up over time?
The insurer and product administrator make premium adjustments to our health insurance product of approximately 5% each year as the cost of providing medical services increases.
The premium increases are usually in January and are not affected by how long you have had the policy. So if you take out a policy in December, then it is possible that your premium could increase the next month in January. Of course, if you had taken a policy out in January then you would not have an increase for another 12 months.
You will always be informed at least 1 month prior to a premium increase. This gives you time to make changes to your policy, should you want to.
It is worth noting that there are cases when premiums have not been increased. For example, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, African Unity Life and EssentialMED did not increase their health insurance premiums for almost 2 years.
Premium increases are at the sole discretion of the underwriter and administrator as per the rules of product.
